Investing in US Small Businesses and Employee Ownership
Nov. 04, 2020 7:30 a.m.
Small businesses employ almost half the workforce and U.S. Baby Boomers, who own at least 2.3 million of them, need to sell over the next decade. Attempted sale processes fail 80% of the time. There just aren’t enough buyers. Employees are the natural buyers but don’t have the risk-tolerance, money, or experience to do it alone. Teamshares is solving this problem by buying companies from retirement-age owners and transitioning them to majority employee ownership over 10+ years. Teamshares buy companies from retiring owners, seed employee ownership, incorporate our financial software and education, and plug them into our peer network. The team has successfully completed the first three small business transitions and employee-ownership conversions at Teamshares in 1Q20, the second of which was Planforce Group, an architecture firm right here in greater Minneapolis. Alex Eu is a co-founder of Teamshares, a venture backed company helping convert small businesses to be employee owned. He is also President of All Type Electric, a family and employee owned electrical contractor and a co-founder of Libero Sports, an emerging markets soccer agency. He previously worked at investment firm The Chernin Group and investment bank Perella Weinberg Partners Mike Schahfer is the Director of Business Operations at Teamshares where he works on building a smooth onboarding and transition process for our companies. Mike started his career at the Boston Consulting Group before working in operations at a N.Y. based charter school network called Uncommon Schools. He received his B.A. from Duke University and remains a huge fan of its basketball team. |

Nov. 18, 2020 7:30 a.m.
Jack McCann, entrepreneurial founder of TC.Farm, will share the compelling story of how he and his wife left regular jobs to buy a 23-acre hobby farm to raise better foods than what was offered at the grocery store. Jack has found success in a business and distribution model that allows them and other farmers to raise food the right way. Hear Jack’s success story, what it took to get there, and how he’s discovered opportunity in a pandemic. |

Get your tickets to see a special Zoom version of A Christmas Carol from the Guthrie. Watch it prior to December 21, 202,0 and then join your City of Lakes Rotary friends to discuss it at 7:00 PM on Monday, December 21! The Guthrie's McGuire Proscenium Stage was converted into a film set during November as Joseph Haj and filmmaker E.G. Bailey co-directed Dickens' Holiday Classic. A small group of beloved local actors, crew members, and staff worked together to fuse theater and film into an all-new production being edited as we speak. And the Guhtrie is not alone. As The New York Times reported, many theaters are keeping their holiday traditions alive with virtual variations of their staged A Christmas Carol productions — the Guthrie included. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online here. If you purchase a ticket, you will create and/or log into your account on the Guthrie's website to view the prerecorded performance at your convenience beginning December 19. You and members of your household may watch it an unlimited number of times until the link expires at 11:59 p.m. on December 31. Our group discussion will take place on December 21 at 7:00 PM via Zoom: Click to Join the Meeting Meeting ID: 839 2239 4336

Physician Suicide during COVID-19
Jan. 27, 2021 7:30 a.m.
While we are all too aware that the coronavirus has challenged our healthcare systems, our country and our world, the pressures physicians and health care workers face even before the pandemic are complex and immense. They dedicate their careers to keeping people healthy, but too often do not receive the care they need to address their own well-being.Statistics show physicians have a high rate of suicide with roughly one doctor dying every day, nearly double the rate of the general population. They will also discuss strategies for organizational culture change around stress, burnout, and fostering resilience in healthcare settings. Join us on January 27 to hear two leading University of Minnesota Medical School professionals (Dr. Jeff Wozniak and Dr. Sophia Albott) tell us more. Dr. Jeffrey Wozniak received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Kent State University in 1997, internship at the University of Minnesota in 1997, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Pediatric Neuropsychology at the University of Minnesota in 1999. Dr. Wozniak runs the Child and Adolescent Neuropsychology Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry where he sees patients with a variety of neurodevelopmental, neurological, and psychiatric conditions. He also trains graduate students and clinical psychology interns in the practice of clinical neuropsychology. His clinical interests include neuropsychological evaluation of children with neurological and psychiatric disorders, consultation with schools regarding academic programming and modifications, and clinical training. Dr. Sophia Albott received a BA in Neuroscience from Grinnell College in Iowa and then graduated with a BA and a Masters in Philosophy from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. She completed medical school here at the University of Minnesota, where she also did her residency in psychiatry, and her T32 postdoctoral fellowship in psychiatric comorbidity. Dr. Albott is an adult psychiatrist with a clinical focus on neuromodulation, deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS), treatment-resistant depression, mood disorders, translational neuroscience, women's mental health, and comorbid psychiatric disorders. Disparities in Minnesota
Mar. 10, 2021
We Minnesotans take pride in our state and how it ranks “first” in many categories relative to quality of life and the opportunities for success that many enjoy. However, many of those “firsts” only apply to white-color Minnesotans, not to those who identify as black or brown or as being from other marginalized communities. When you dig into the data, the disparities become glaring. This talk isn’t intended to shame anyone about those disparities, nor is it intended to make anyone feel guilty about having a white skin color. Rather, I believe that most people want to do the right thing; it’s just that most aren’t aware of how bad the skin color-based differences are and many don’t have any idea of how to work for concrete, positive change. With this talk, Ellie seeks to shed some light on the gravity of the problem and offer some ideas on how to fix things. She welcomes your thoughts and ideas on this important topic. Ellie Krug: In 2009, when she was a civil trial attorney in Cedar Rapids with 100+ trials, Ellen (Ellie) Krug transitioned from male to female; she later became one of the few attorneys nationally to try jury cases in separate genders. The author of Getting to Ellen: A Memoir about Love, Honesty and Gender Change (2013), Ellie has trained on diversity and inclusion to court systems, law firms, Fortune 100 corporations, and colleges/universities on nearly 1000 occasions. A hopeless idealist, Ellie has presented her inclusivity training, Gray Area Thinking®, across the country. In 2016, Advocate Magazine named Ellie one of “25 Legal Advocates Fighting for Trans Rights” and in 2019, OutFront Minnesota conferred Ellie its Legacy Award. She is also a monthly columnist for Lavender Magazine and a weekly radio host on AM950 radio. Her monthly e-newsletter, The Ripple, reaches 9000+ readers and can be found at www.elliekrug.com . Ellie presently lives in Minneapolis and is the founder and president of Human Inspiration Works, LLC (www.humaninspirationworks.com). |

Rotary Hope Award recipient 2020
Mar. 17, 2021
Settled activates and equips faith communities to pursue home with the homeless through sustainable housing, purposeful work, and supportive community. Join us March 17th to learn how! Settled was created as a response to the enormous barriers to housing the homeless by generating affordable housing in an intentional community environment through private funding, religious land federally protected against NIMBYism, purposeful work opportunities, and missional neighbors who live and serve alongside the formerly homeless. Gabrielle holds a Bachelor's and Master's in Architecture and is at the end of a 5-year Ph.D. program in Housing Studies where she brought a "Community First" approach to homelessness to the academic community for the first time, comparing it with the prevailing "Housing First” model. Before entering into this work, she was the head of the Architecture department at a nonprofit that converted shipping containers into orphanages, clinics, and schools in partnership with developing nations.
