Community Service
Service Above Self is Rotary’s principal motto, which means that Rotarians seek to improve the quality of life in his or her community and around the world through service. The Community Service committee develops and implement educational and humanitarian projects that help the area where we live and work.
Minneapolis City of Lakes Rotary Club prides itself on the good work we do in our community. Our members give generously of their time, talents and money. Our strategic focus of service is on “Read and Feed” – getting books and food into the hands of kids in need in Minneapolis.
Here are samples of the kinds of activities the Community Service committee supports:
- Community Emergency Services food shelf fulfillment and shelf restocking
- Project for Pride in Living (PPL) literacy related service projects
- CANStruction – design & build unique temporary structures using food cans that are then donated to local food shelves
- Supplying books for kids’ early education at Way to Grow
- Stocking the Little Free Library at the Minneapolis Police’s 4th Precinct with children's books
- Delivering gifts, books and meals at the holidays
- Distributing bags of wholesome food to kids in their backpacks on Fridays to reduce weekend food gap
- Delivering dictionaries to individuals in the Hennepin County Corrections system
- Fall raking for seniors and shut-ins
- Funding and promoting the district-wide initiative against human trafficking
Dates of committee meetings are generally scheduled quarterly. Email notices will be sent out to committee members in advance and also be announced at weekly meetings.
The Community Service Committee offers a great way to give back to your community as much as your schedule allows, have fun and get to know your fellow Rotarians. We welcome new ideas and new members. Come join us at an event or a meeting and experience the good feeling of giving back with good people.
