CBD 101 (The Wild West of Cannabidiol)
Apr. 22, 2020
With the legalization of hemp at the federal level included in the 2018 Farm Bill, public curiosity about CBD is soaring. Three years ago, no one was searching CBD online, but now there are an estimated 6.4 million unique searches each month and – global pandemic aside – it is estimated to be a $20B industry by 2024. What is CBD? What is an endocannabinoid system? What the heck is a terpene? Why is testing important? Where does a consumer even start? COL Member Jodi Massey and her husband, Patrick, are the founders of Allvane CBD. Their passion for CBD stems from a desire to find natural solutions that both feel good and do good, and a belief that they can bring more integrity, transparency and quality to a confusing CBD market. They will be joined by Dr. Amanda Long, PH.D. |

From A24films:"Set on a stretch of highway just outside the imagined utopia of Disney World, The Florida Project follows six-year-old and her rebellious mother Halley over the course of a single summer. The two live week to week at “The Magic Castle,” a budget motel.
Despite her harsh surroundings, the precocious and ebullient Moonee has no trouble making each day a celebration of life, her endless afternoons overflowing with mischief and grand adventure as she and her ragtag playmates fearlessly explore the utterly unique world into which they’ve been thrown. Unbeknownst to Moonee, however, her delicate fantasy is supported by the toil and sacrifice of Halley, who is forced to explore increasingly dangerous possibilities in order to provide for her daughter." Ten Plants That Changed Minnesota
Jul. 29, 2020 7:30 a.m.
In 2012 a committee of experts chose the ten plants that most changed Minnesota from nearly five hundred citizen nominations, hosted by the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. The idea that plants, as few as ten, could shape a state and how it developed economically, culturally, and historically, is at the core of the Ten Plants that Changed Minnesota project, which also includes a companion website and a popular freshman seminar at the University of Minnesota. With careful review by more than thirty experts and scientists and with research drawn from newspaper and journal reports, historical photos, diaries, and interviews, Mary Hockenberry Meyer and Susan Davis Price highlight the importance of the selected plants and their impact—both positive and negative—in the development and future of our state. The plants are the apple, alfalfa, the American elm, corn, lawn or turfgrass, purple loosestrife, soybeans, wheat, wild rice, and white pine. |

Sep. 16, 2020 7:30 a.m.
As our communities grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic and our nation experiences a renewed civil rights movement, the topics of equity and justice are front and center. Fresh Energy, an independent energy policy nonprofit based in Saint Paul, has been on a journey for several years to prioritize access and equity in its work to address its mission to shape and drive bold policy solutions to achieve equitable carbon-neutral economies. Join executive director Michael Noble and director of energy access and equity Ben Passer as they discuss Fresh Energy’s past, present, and future at this critical intersection of issues. Michael Noble is a 30-year energy leader, well-known for shaping and driving the major public policy innovations that are speeding Minnesota and the Midwest’s transition from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy. As Executive Director of Fresh Energy, Michael builds and catalyzes partnerships to secure new policies and harness market forces to achieve visionary change. As Director of Energy Access and Equity, Ben Passer directs Fresh Energy’s work to advance equitable outcomes across Minnesota’s energy system, and also supports the organization’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. He joined Fresh Energy as a Policy Associate in May 2015. Ben holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Minnesota and a Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law.
