B Corporations: Doing Work That Matters

May 22, 2019

Our world’s most challenging problems and promising opportunities cannot be solved by government and nonprofits alone. Certified B Corporations are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. Two of Minnesota’s 17 B-Corps – businesses that meet strict standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability – will be with us to discuss their journeys. Hear from Sunrise Banks and Russell Herder about what B-Corps are, why they made the conversion and what’s involved for others to do the same.

Plant for the Future Campaign

Jun 05, 2019

Emerald Ash Borer is making its way across Minnesota and the highly-visible loss of ash trees is impacting our communities beyond our city streets. Major changes to the Mississippi River's landscape are on the horizon. The 72-mile Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, the national park in the heart of the Twin Cities, will lose more than 20% of its canopy within the next ten years, forever changing the landscape, river quality, natural areas and wildlife we love.  Plant for the Future, a program of Mississippi Park Connection, is a proactive plan to improve this outlook through a $1M campaign including educational programming, plantings, special events, volunteer and fundraising opportunities, and more.  Former RI President Ian S. Riseley challenged Rotary clubs across the globe to plant trees in their communities for every member of their club. #9 and Minneapolis City of Lakes Rotary have committed to providing 300 trees that will be planted as part of the Plant for the Future campaign.  To facilitate more robust trees and also support trees well beyond the initial commitment, Rotary will first be installing a community tree nursery (otherwise referred to as a gravel bed) that will support the growth of healthy trees for years into the future. The tree nursery will be installed at Coldwater Spring (park area near Minnehaha Falls owned and managed by the Park Service).

GREATER MSP: Doubling Down On Our Region’s Economic Success

Jul 10, 2019

Coming out of the Great Recession, our region’s job growth was lagging behind the national average and we weren’t winning our fair share of economic expansion. This realization led to the Itasca Project, an employer-led civic alliance focused on building a thriving economy and improved quality of life, creating the GREATER MSP Partnership in 2011. This was a critical shift in approach to expanding our region’s economy to compete and win on a global scale. Together we are making Greater MSP one of the world’s best regions to live and work.

The GREATER MSP Partnership is doubling down on our region’s future economic success. Its board of directors, along with hundreds of Investors, partners and stakeholders throughout the region are accelerating this effort in Partnership 2.0. We are advancing a bolder vision and mission, increased strategic alignment, a clear organizational strategy and stronger partner communications.

The Partnership’s unique platform of collaboration exists to channel inspiration, harness innovation, and propel our region forward in an ever-changing and competitive global economy. This is an exciting time to be engaged in the GREATER MSP Partnership.

Plant for the Future: Part II
Oct 26, 2019 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Former RI President Ian S. Riseley challenged Rotary clubs across the globe to plant a tree for every member of our clubs in our local communities. Minneaplis Club #9 and Minneapolis City of Lakes Rotary joined forces to support the efforts of non-profit Mississippi Park Connection and the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, the National Park in the heart of the Twin Cities.

Please join us on Oct. 26 as we move the trees that our members planted in the tree nursery last May into their permanent homes in the national park. The nursery (also known as a gravel bed) housed 250 bare root trees over the summer to receive the critical care needed to ensure their success once transferred to the ground in the park.

Please contact Jodi Massey with City of Lakes or Jim Hancock with #9 to RSVP or to get more info.

About Plant for the Future

Rake Rattle & Roll
Nov 02, 2019 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM

Our annual Rake Rattle & Roll event is happening on Saturday, November 2!  We'll meet at 8:30am in the US Bank parking lot and finish raking by 11-11:15 a.m., followed by an optional (but, oh so delicious) lunch of Juicy Lucys at Matt's Bar.

Here are the details:

  • 8:30 AM – We gather in the northeast corner of the US Bank parking lot at 2800 E Lake St., Minneapolis, MN 55406. There we will go over the logistics for the day, take group photos, and break into 3 raking teams, each of which will be assigned 5-6 yards. Maps will be distributed to help volunteers find each yard to which their team is assigned.
  • 9:00 to 11:00 (11:15?) – Each team rakes the assigned yards.
  • 11:00/11:15 to 1:00 – Those volunteers who are interested will adjourn to Matt’s Bar for Jucy Lucys, fries, and beverages of their choice (the total cost of the lunch, including tip, will be divided pro-rata by those participating in the lunch).

What You Need to Know:

  • This is a family friendly event. You are encouraged to bring spouses, significant others, friends, and children (who are old enough to be of some assistance and to understand the concept of giving back to others less fortunate).
  • You should bring your own rakes (label your rakes and other equipment with your name and phone number on a piece of tape; things can go missing), a good pair of gloves, and other items you think would be helpful for yard cleanup, such as a leaf blower. We will supply compostable bags which, when filled, the teams will place in the alley behind the houses (or such other space as is designated by the homeowner).
  • You will be given a make-up credit for your participation.
  • This is a rain or shine event (unless the weather is really bad, such as 2” or more of snow or bad lightning, in which case you should contact Gary Mosiman for instructions. So please make sure to dress for the weather.
  • We ask that you please register yourself and all guests on the COLRC website to get a good idea how many people will be on hand to help. Please register using the Members or Guests button on the left side of this page.
  • You will share a great, “feel good” experience with your family and friends!

Hope to see you there!
